When murder is committed in a democracy, the expectation is that the state will investigate and use all its powers to identify and hold the murderer to account. When the murderer is an agent of the state however and the perpetrator is neither identified nor held to account the families of the victims are plunged into a world outside democracy.
Each year in the programme The State We Are In creates space for such families to speak and update us on their campaigns for justice. This year’s speakers are Liam Wray who’s brother Jim was shot dead on Bloody Sunday, Geraldine Doherty whose uncle Gerard Donaghy was also murdered that day and then had nail bombs planted on his body, and Susanne McKerr who’s Grandfather John McKerr was shot dead in the Ballymurphy Massacre.
The event is chaired by our own Eamonn McCann.
