This is award-winning playwright and actor Donal O’Kelly’s solo play about Frank Sheehy-Skeffington. Sheehy-Skeffington was a socialist, who campaigned for votes for women and against recruitment to World War I. He was shot dead in Portobello Barracks, 26th April, 1916.
The play is told through the eyes of a Dublin street beggar today.
Frank Sheehy-Skeffington was dubbed “Hairy Jaysus” by his friend James Joyce and Seán O’Casey said he was “the soul of revolt against man’s inhumanity to man, the ripest ear of corn that fell in Easter Week”.
Often called a crank by others, he responded “a crank is a small instrument that makes revolutions”.
Hairy Jaysus will play New York in April 2016.
A version of the play was broadcast by RTE in 2013. More about: Donal O’Kelly and his Facebook page
