Goya’s – The Third of May 1808

Eamonn McCann will deliver a short talk on the political context of Goya’s painting “The Third of May 1808 in Madrid”, the original inspiration for Ballagh’s 1970 painting.

The new mural in Glenfada Park is based on Robert Ballagh’s painting from 1970.  Ballagh was responding to redeployment of British Troops on to the streets of Derry and Belfast in August 1969.

Ballagh in his turn was inspired by Goya’s  “The Third of May 1808 in Madrid”.  In his painting Goya sought to commemorate Spanish resistance to Napoleon’s armies during the occupation of 1808 in the Peninsular War. His paintings have inspired many anti-war works the most famous of which is Picasso’s “Geurnica”.
