Addressing Injustices from the Past

The British Government’s ‘Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary’ (HMIC) has delivered a damning report on the “serious shortcomings” of the Historical Inquiry’s Team (HET).  The NI Attorney General wants us to “draw a line in the sand”. ‘Haass’ has been and gone, with still no agreement on how we deal with our past.

Drawing on three unresolved cases from the past, this event will explore the obstacles to achieving justice for the many politically motivated acts of violence perpetrated in the course of the conflict and how they might be overcome:

  • Paddy Hill will speak on the miscarriage of justice in his case (Birmingham 6),
  • Liam Wray will speak on the current state of the investigation into the murder of his brother Jim on Bloody Sunday,
  • Raymond McCord will speak on the campaign for justice after the murder of his son Raymond by the UVF.

Prof. Patrica Lundy who wrote an earlier critical report into the HET, its role, structure and limitations, will speak her own research and the more recent HMIC report.

The event will be chaired by Phil Scraton Professor of Criminology at Queens University.
